The Other Florida Tree

Not a palm, this tree was an object of curiosity. I couldn't tell if it was dead, or dormant because of winter, or if this was its natural state -- it's actually "furry" with air plants and Spanish Moss hanging off. And its branches seemed prickly. What IS this thing?
